Static product upsells show the same products to every shopper, whatever is in their cart. They are ideal for impulse buys, best-sellers, new arrivals or seasonal items you want in front of every customer, and they are the quickest way to start offering cart upsells in your Shopify cart drawer.
When to use static upsells
- Low-cost add-ons that suit any order, such as gift cards, care products or samples.
- A featured collection you want to promote for a campaign.
- A simple fallback while you build more targeted rules.
Set up a static upsell
- Add a recommendation widget to your cart drawer and choose its placement: the cart body, the footer or the sidebar beside the cart.
- Create a custom data source for the widget and give it a clear name.
- Set the rule to IF anything, so it always matches.
- Choose what it returns: specific products (and their variants) or a collection.
- Set how many products to show.
- Save the widget.
Filters and scheduling
- Filter input products: hide products the shopper already has in the cart.
- Out-of-stock filters: hide products or variants that can't be purchased.
- Exclusion filters: exclude specific products or product tags from the results, which is useful when returning a collection.
- Scheduling: set a start date and an optional end date, in your store's time zone, to run the offer for a limited time.
Display options
- Screens: choose a grid, list or line layout for large, medium and small screens, add a carousel or pagination, set the columns, or hide the widget on a screen size.
- Product settings: control variants, quantity, images and the details shown on each product.
- Language: edit the widget title, labels and button text.
- Discount: optionally apply a percentage or fixed discount to the recommended products.
- Styles: match the widget to your brand.
A widget can be shown in several cart drawers. Changes to a shared widget apply to every cart that uses it.
Best practices
- Keep the list short and update it regularly so returning shoppers see something new.
- Choose products that are cheaper than a typical cart item to encourage quick additions.
- For an empty cart, use the empty cart's own product suggestions.
Troubleshooting
- Some products are missing: they may already be in the cart, be out of stock, match an exclusion filter or exceed the product limit.
- The upsell doesn't appear: check the schedule dates, that the widget is turned on for this cart drawer and that the current screen size isn't hidden.
- The widget doesn't show in an empty cart: recommendation widgets appear in carts with products.
